Jackie's Story

Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

In late 2004 Jackie Smith was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital with acute respiratory failure. She was being treated on the haematology ward having presented acutely with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).  She ended up spending 5 weeks on the ICU and survived  numerous complications, setbacks and  adverse experinces that included:
  • profound sepsis and multi-organ failure
  • haemodialysis
  • bleeding
  • critical illness polyneuropathy and paraplegia
  • acute respiratory distress syndrome
  • difficulty weaning and prolonged tracheostomy
The following are a selection of articles written by her husband Stewart that describe her initial amazing recovery and the recent devastating news of a leukaemia relapse.
